Progress of CAADP in Kenya

Agriculture in Kenya directly contributes to 26 per cent of the GDP and another 25 per cent indirectly. It employs over 40 per cent of the total population but over 70 per cent of the rural population.

#CAADPKe Vincent Githinji from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, said that in response to Vision 2030, the agricultural sector ministries developed the Agricultural Sector Development Strategy (ASDS) as a tool to implement CAADP. Medium Term Investment Plan (MTIP) 2010-2017 was developed to implement ASDS.
“Issues that the MTIP address are similar to CAADP pillars,” he said. “These are also aligned to the Malabo Declaration.”

#CAADPKe In regards to the challenges that Kenya was facing in implementing the CAADP framework the private sector had not been included to a greater level as a key partner. There is need to enhance and develop mutual accountability and financing the existing gaps. Also, the sector coordination and synchronisation needed to be done.

The devolution process has brought about the need to bring on board the county governments. Furthermore, there was limited framework for monitoring and evaluating the framework.

#CAADPKe On the way forwards, Githinji said the Kenya CAADP team needed to be strengthened. Many sector players were not aware of what CAADP is meaning sensitization is needed and a communication strategy needs to be put in place. The county governments also need to be incorporated in the CAADP process and thematic working groups need to be formed since the agricultural sector is extremely large.
